Workshop Series 2026
Session One

On January 18-19, 2026, aspiring trail builders from across Kansas gathered at Horse Thief Reservoir for Kansas Trails Inc.’s very first TrailCraft trail design and construction seminar. This inaugural workshop brought together an intrepid group of volunteers eager to learn the art and science of sustainable trail building. Their commitment was on full display as they faced 40 mph winds and 20-degree temperatures on Saturday—proving that passion for trails doesn’t stop when the weather turns challenging.

Despite the conditions, participants spent the day combining classroom instruction with hands-on learning, scouting bluff viewpoints on the south side of the lake and identifying significant natural features worth showcasing. The group worked collaboratively to flag a new trail route leading from the trailhead to the first scenic overlook, carefully balancing sustainability, user experience, and the surrounding landscape.

With calmer weather on Sunday, the team put their TrailCraft lessons into action. Armed with tools and new knowledge, they began bench cutting and opened a brand-new section of trail. This weekend marked just the beginning of what we hope will be many TrailCraft seminars across the state. We’re excited to see the incredible trails this group will help develop in their communities—their energy, grit, and dedication to Kansas trails are truly inspiring.
